Y,
Another beautifully crafted poem full of imagery. The line “tearing on the hook of childhood memories” really grabbed me. I also love the transition of “opening into the face of these tugging magnolias.”
To me the word “face” wrapped as it is, paints both a persons face “breaking, blossoming, opening” and yet you have “into the face” also tying the breaking, blossoming opening” to the magnolias… very nicely done. In the end I see a vision of a person smiling while enjoying and immersing them self into the flowers.
Sad but lovely.
A beautiful photo of the beauty of light in the magnolias blossoms… very apropos
thank you, Stephen. i wanted to layer the word face with several meanings because i’m still searching for a “face” in the magnolias, in memories, etc. thank you, again.
the lily magnolias
are breaking
open –
lit like candles
on heavy-laden
branches, extending
their well-timed
lanterns into the
darkness
lit like boats
caught on a
breeze, tearing
on the hook
of childhood
memories
lit like a search
party that will
return again
empty-handed
lit like the altar
for forty-nine days
lit like the thought of you
breaking, blossoming,
opening
into the face
of these tugging
magnolias
.

The color and light in this photograph illustrate that pulling-in so very well.
thank you, Leslie.
