i lost a button
today. no, not a new
button that comes with
a conceited sort of
disappointment,
but rather
one with an
accompanying
endearment, worn
from use, like dear
button, or darling –
one with a personal
pronoun, one who
dependably held
me together, showed
me off, instilled
confidence –
after all these years
of taking warmth
for granted,
even the morning draft stung
with inescapable despair
when i lost you today
.

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
taken from The Prophet – Khalil Gibran
Play alive – it stops the pain
I will leave you now. I do hope that your sorrow passes away quickly. If its any consolation I am not sure how I stumbled across your blog and now I am thinking of your difficulties from the other side of the world.
I just figured this out, “Y”. I think this poem would make this person you lost today feel very pleased and honored that you feel the way you do about his or her importance in your life. Your writing has been beautiful. I’m sorry for your loss.
thank you so much, Leslie. i haven’t been very good at expressing gratitude for condolences because that’s something that i don’t want to write down (smile).
