   last night we heard
   that you had been long
   gone – two-hundred-and-
   eighty-six-days-gone.

   this kind of news can only
   hit like old news:

   precise, factual,
   final, historical.

   but outside of
   fact, the history
   of us unbraids
   with a finality –
   each memorable
   filament unwinds and
   clings with precision.

   we went to bed –
   newly lost, old tears
   .
