thirty-four monks were
at your service
yesterday, such professional
chanting, such polished
sutras. memorial banners
flew in from far and wide,
red for your joy, white
for our sorrow, elegant
calligraphy for the man
who lived.
and when the fragrant
wreaths marched in
in lock step, over one
hundred mourners
sniffled in unison,
wiped their burning
eyes in a
synchronized
gesture
within this courtly dance
.

it’s called a Mu Yu, or “Wooden Fish,” which is used as a wooden block with a mallet. one “plays” it by knocking on it while chanting or meditating, and keeping time. thank you for visiting.
My first thought was something designed with a 🙂 on it. How very interesting. The poetry, today is absolutely beautiful. I imagine the service was, also.
i also see something smiling back on this wooden block! thank you.
Yes, it’s Mu Yu. I played a lot with it when I was little, just beating it around my home, lol.
